Google says its schools change gives 'more choice, not less'
Google posted a clarification after backlash over its education announcement, drawing about 1,100 likes.
Google said today's announcements about its education services give schools more choice, not less. Gemini, Gemini Notebook and Search will be off by default, which it said was based on K-12 schools asking for more control over student use of AI services.
Schools can choose to turn on one, two or all of these services individually, according to the post. Google also said it is updating Search for schools so that AI Mode and AI Overviews offer step-by-step guided learning through problems, so students don't get quick answers to schoolwork.
The clarification follows widespread criticism of the change earlier in the day, including posts framing it as Google turning off Search for schools that block its AI tools.
