Agaram 2.5B: a Tamil-first model trained from scratch that can call tools
Non-profit Murai Labs released base, chat and GGUF files under Apache-2.0.

Murai Labs, a small non-profit lab, released Agaram 2.5B, a Tamil-first language model trained from scratch. The team says that, as far as it knows, it is the first Tamil model trained from scratch that can call tools.
It chats in Tamil, Tanglish and English, translates, and can run offline on a laptop. The base model, chat model and GGUF files are released under Apache-2.0. The team rebuilt the fine-tuning after a four-day public preview, using 222,662 records.
Why it mattersSmall open models built for one language show that useful AI doesn't have to come only from the biggest labs or focus only on English.
