Japanese car-sharing service Times Car will pay about 3,000 yen each to roughly 1.46 million people whose driver's license images were leaked, according to @polymarketjapan. The post puts the total at about 4.4 billion yen and drew around 2,500 likes.

Driver's licenses are commonly used to verify identity when people sign up for car sharing, so services like this hold large collections of ID photos. When those images leak, they can be reused for fraud and impersonation.

Why it mattersCompensation on this scale puts a concrete price on a data breach, and on customers' ID documents. It also adds to a run of Japanese privacy stories on today's board, alongside the Panasonic leak tied to a generative AI tool.
