Panasonic leak of 330,000 people's data traced to an AI chatbot
An employee reportedly pasted personal records of staff, retirees and families into a generative AI tool.
Panasonic leaked personal data belonging to roughly 330,000 people after an employee pasted it into a generative AI tool, according to a post by @polymarketjapan that drew about 18,700 likes. The post says the exposed information included addresses and phone numbers of staff, retirees and their families.
It is one of the clearest examples yet of a risk security teams have warned about since chatbots went mainstream: employees sharing sensitive files with outside AI services to save time, without realizing where that data ends up.
Why it mattersThe story is less about AI being hacked and more about everyday workflows. Clear rules on what can be pasted into AI tools, plus approved internal options, are becoming as basic for companies as password policies.
