Researchers at Socket uncovered 319 Chrome extensions that redirected users' searches through servers controlled by their operators before sending them on to Yahoo or Bing, according to a Pirat_Nation post.
The extensions were disguised as PDF converters, game search tools, manual finders and even AI assistants. In total 13.4 million users were affected, with 264 newly discovered extensions accounting for 8.7 million of them.
The activity dates back to 2016, and the operators earned money through search referral advertising programs.
